Thirty Violent or Sudden Deaths Investigated During the Year
As a matter of record we publish a list of the inquests held during the year 1891 by Coroner Poet. The list is not to long as that of the year previous, but when it is taken into consideration that during the year about thirty- three death from accident and natural causes were brought to the Coroners attention, in which he decided an inquest unnecessary, it will be seen that it could have been easily enlarge by an officer not so conscientious about serving the people honestly.
Following is the record, with the names of the dead and dates of the inquest.
BERKHEIMER, Harry J. November 10, a brakeman on the Pennsylvania and Northwestern railroad, death accidental, residence at Petersburg. BICE, John March 21, struck by cars near McCahan’s bluff, residence Duncansville. BRANTNER, Miss Annie April 1, infant child, death the result of criminal negligence on the part of the mother. BRANZATTA, Michael July 30, who was struck by engine 1187 above McGarvey’s accidental. BREMAN, W. W. September 23, of Altoona, death the result of effect of over indulgence in strong drink. BROWN, Mrs. Margaret February 18, aged 51 years, suicide, residence Logan township. COLYER, George February 18, aged 50 years, frozen to death, residence Logan township. COURAN, Dennis May 1, aged 65, at Bennington Furnace, Heart failure. DICKSON, W. D. May 10, killed by cars at Bellwood. GAMBLE, Dr. James January 14, cerebral apoplexy, residence Altoona. GRAZIER, Millard June 12, The body was held at Bellwood, He was a employee of the Pennsylvania and Northwestern railroad and the verdict that his death was cause by a train breaking and becoming unmanageable on account of heavy grade and wet rail and too many cars for front engine to hold. HAMMER, Martin September 23, of Altoona, found dead in his stable in the rear of his house on Twelfth Avenue and Twenty-first and Twenty-second Streets. HASLOW, Samuel October 6, (colored) who fell from freight train over side of bridge No. 11 to the river below crushing his head and causing instant death. HENCH, Augustus August 25, at Elizabeth Furnace, death the result of natural causes incident to old age. HEVERLY, W. P. April 9, aged 47 years, killed by fall of coal Tipton mines, accidental. KELLY, John November 23, aged 30 years died at the Altoona hospital from injuries received at the hands of Edward Donahue. KEYES, Elias January 28, aged 48 years, flagman in Tyrone yard, crushed by car, accidental, residence Tyrone. KINNEY, James May 23, at Baker’s Mines, died of Heart Failure. KYLER, Isaac May 14, killed by a train of cars crushing him through the upper house wall in Altoona Yards. MARKOW, an Austrian November 8, accidentally killed at Pennsylvania railroad coal siding at Bellwood. MERRITTS, Charles E. January 12, infant 9 months old, natural cause, residence Hollidaysburg. O’CONNOR, William January 9, aged 23 years; brakeman in Altoona yard, fell from car which passed over him, was a accident, lived in Altoona. PAGE, Samuel D. May 19, aged 35, died from injuries received by the cars near Fourth Street in Altoona. REIGE G. W. August 18, shot himself with bullet from 32 caliber revolver from the effect of which he died, the result being hastened by his previous bad health. SIEGE, Max February 25, aged 24 years, burned to death in Mrs. Rittman’s stables, Residence Altoona. SIMON, John June 12, The body was held at Bellwood, He was a employee of the Pennsylvania and Northwestern railroad and the verdict that his death was cause by a train breaking and becoming unmanageable on account of heavy grade and wet rail and too many cars for front engine to hold. SUTTER, Alphonse April 12, aged 47, in Altoona, death due to hemorrhage of the stomach. UNKNOWN, Female Child May 10, found at the mouth of the railroad sewer below Fourth Street. UNKNOWN, Man April 12, who was struck by engine near Mount Furnace and died in Altoona hospital, accidental. VANSEOYOC, Stephen June 12, The body was held at Bellwood, He was a employee of the Pennsylvania and Northwestern railroad and the verdict that his death was cause by a train breaking and becoming unmanageable on account of heavy grade and wet rail and too many cars for front engine to hold. VINISKY, Valentine January 11, aged 34, Suicide, residence Altoona. WHITE, M. L. January 1, aged 22 years; brakeman in Altoona yard, killed by engine running over him, was a accident.
