List of coroner’s inquests for the year 1894, held by Michael Poet, Coroner For Blair County.

 

ARBLE, Mrs. Annie  February 26, Altoona, Verdict; death was the result of causes which are not positively known to us, but probably resulted from poison administered by her own hands.

BENDER, Joseph  March 14, Altoona, Verdict; death was caused by a stone thrown by William McCormick.

BUTLER, William  April 9, Martinsburg, Verdict; death was caused by a bullet wound in the head, the bullet being shot from a revolver in the hands of J. F. Kyler.

CAMERER, Jacob  September 18, Altoona, Verdict; death was caused by being struck by a freight train on the Hollidaysburg branch near the city limits breaking his neck.

CAVATCH, John  June 30, Carlem, Verdict; death was cause while at work in the quarry of the Juniata Limestone Company, being struck by a fall of rock.

CRUSE, G. W.  October 24, Bennington, Verdict; death was caused by being struck with the cars in Gallitzin Tunnel.

DARLINGTON, J. D.  October 20, Altoona, Verdict; death was caused by accidentally falling down the cellar steps at the Globe hotel.

DUNN, James A. Engineer  December 29, Verdict; we find that James A. Dunn came to his death through an accident due to negligence on the part of Flagman H. M. Wallace in not protecting the rear end of his train and not adjusting the proper signal light on the cabin.  Also that Engineer John S. Fickes of the first Philadelphia Express, did not use proper caution in following his orders with regard to extra 737 running ahead of him to Spruce Creek.

GRIFFIN, Sulla  January 27, Tyrone, Verdict; death cause by taken a overdose of some strong medicine.

GUISKEY, Morris  April 17, Tyrone, Verdict; death was cause by being struck by an eastbound train on the Pennsylvania railroad near Tyrone Forges on the evening of April 16.

HARTLEY, E. M.  October 13, Bellwood, Verdict; death was caused by taking an overdose of laudanum, whether with suicide intent or not is unknown to the jury.

ISENBERG, G. W.  April 18, Altoona, Verdict; death was caused by being knocked down and run over by the tank of shifting engine No. 504, in the Altoona yard of Pennsylvania railroad company.

KEAGY, James S.  April 9, Altoona, Verdict; death was caused by falling from a scaffold twelve feet high in Pennsylvania railroad shop.

KENNEDY, Miles  December 29,1893, of Williamsburg, Verdict; death was cause by the men engaged in the work not having proper understanding in regard to the signal when to fire the shot that put off the blast.

KITCHELL, David F.  March 3, Altoona, Verdict; death was caused by being ran over by engine No. 202 in the ash pit of round house No. 1, in the Altoona yard.

LEVENE, Israel  October 29, Altoona, Verdict; death was caused by being run over by a car loaded with pig iron in Stratton’s yard.

MATERN, Michael  October 17, Altoona, Verdict; death was caused by the coming in of the side of a sewer in Altoona city.

McCLAIN, John  April 24, Altoona, Verdict; death was caused by lockjaw, the same being the result of an injury sustained by being struck with a street car.

McCORMICK, Mrs. Susanna  August 12, Greensburg, Snyder Township, Verdict; death was caused by heart failure on the 11th of August.

McKINNEY, Daniel  July 23, Altoona, Verdict; death was caused by being struck by a west bound train, probably while getting off the eastbound freight train in the Gallitzin tunnel.

MILLER, William  August 23, Altoona, Verdict; death was caused by a bullet wound in the head produced by a pistol shot by the deceased whether accidentally or otherwise is unknown to the jury.

MOKBE, Frank B.  January 11, at Altoona, Verdict; death was cause by his head being caught between the engine tank and the trestle standing on a track in No. 2 roundhouse.

NOLAND, James  July 23, Altoona, Verdict; death was caused by being struck with a train in the same manner as Daniel McKinney.

PALMER, Frank G.  July 27, Altoona, Verdict; death was caused by being caught between cars and crushed.

PRY, Joseph  October 9, Tyrone, Verdict; death was cause by caused by being struck by an east bound train at Tyrone.

ROCK, John  May 21, Hollidaysburg, Verdict; death was caused by hanging himself.

SACERMAN, D.  May 3, Altoona, Verdict; death was caused by the wrecking of a freight train from breaking of a car wheel on the Pennsylvania railroad.

SMITH, Robert  January 21, Altoona, Verdict; death was cause by taking an overdose of laudanum and also stimulants.

SNOWFER, William S.  August 16. Altoona, Verdict; death was caused by being run over by a freight car.

STULTZ, Michael H.  November 26, Hollidaysburg, Verdict; death was caused by being struck and run over by car No. 4 of the Logan Valley Electric Railway Company.

UNKNOWN, Child  May 1, Bellwood, Verdict; death was caused by a criminal operation performed by the mother of the child.

UNKNOWN, Child  May 14, Tyrone, Verdict; death was caused by smothering or strangulation and criminal negligence on the part of the mother.

UNKNOWN, Male Child  June 23, Tyrone, Verdict; jury unable to decide.

UNKNOWN, Man  November 27, Tyrone, Verdict; death was cause by a deep cut on the side of neck made by the hand of some person unknown to the jury.

WALKER, Ada  January 1, at Altoona, Verdict; death was cause by septic poisoning the effect of a miscarriage, produced by a criminal operation.

WILLIAMS, Samuel N.  November 7, Tyrone, Verdict; death was cause by the take of laudanum with suicidal intent.
