Blair County had two coroners during the year 1896. James Foust served for several months, resigning to accept the office of Chief of Police. He was succeeded by Thomas C. McCartney, the present incumbent. These inquests were held during the past several months. Mr. Foust also viewed fifteen other bodies but pronounced inquests unnecessary.
ALCOTT, Charles M. June 23,found dead in an outhouse at his home in Second Ward, Altoona, death was caused by strangulation from hanging by his own hand, verdict, by Coroner McCartney. BUCK, Charles W. January 25, Altoona, Verdict; by Coroner Foust, death by accidental shooting. CRAMER, James H. September 11, Verdict; by Coroner McCartney, who committed suicide at his home on the East side, death was caused by a self-inflicted pistol shot wound of the head. CRAMER, Mrs. Nina September 9, Verdict; by Coroner McCartney, died in surgeon chair at hospital, death was caused by paralysis of the heart. EVENS, Constantine February 4, Hollidaysburg, Verdict; by Coroner Foust, death was caused from injuries received by explosion of a boiler at Hollidaysburg rolling mill, and the jury was unable to determine cause of explosion. FOUST, Mrs. Anna December 28, Verdict; by Coroner McCartney, died suddenly at Duncansville. Death was caused by pneumonia and hysterical spasms. GRADY, Robert J. December 17, Verdict; by Coroner McCartney, found dead on the tracks at Tyrone, death was caused by being struck by an engine. GRUBLER, Andrew April 4, Altoona, Verdict by Coroner Foust, death by suicide. HUNTER, George M. August 28, found dead on Seventh Street near Eighth Avenue, Altoona. Verdict; by Coroner McCartney, death was caused by falling from the third story of the Columbia Hotel. KEPHART, Samuel February 4, Hollidaysburg, Verdict; by Coroner Foust, death was caused from injuries received by explosion of a boiler at Hollidaysburg rolling mill, and the jury was unable to determine cause of explosion. KING, John June 21, Hollidaysburg, Verdict; by Coroner McCartney, death was caused by a stone thrown by the hand of Sigmund Shope. LANE, George February 4, Hollidaysburg, Verdict; by Coroner Foust, death was caused from injuries received by explosion of a boiler at Hollidaysburg rolling mill, and the jury was unable to determine cause of explosion. LOVE, John D. September 4, Verdict; by Coroner McCartney, companion of Rev T. F. Reeser, drowned at Flowing Spring; death was caused by drowning. MARKS, Samuel February 4, Hollidaysburg, Verdict; by Coroner Foust, Death was caused from injuries received by explosion of a boiler at Hollidaysburg rolling mill, and the jury was unable to determine cause of explosion. MARSHALL, John A. October 9, Verdict; by Coroner McCartney, found dead at Scotch Run fill on the main line, death was caused by being struck by an engine. MARTIN, Infant son December 15, Verdict; by Coroner McCartney, found drowned at Royer, death was caused by drowning inflicted by the mother. MARTIN, Mrs. Albert December 15, Verdict; by Coroner McCartney, found drowned at Royer, death was caused by drowning herself and son. McGREGOR, William January 22, Altoona, Verdict; by Coroner Foust, death by arsenic poison administered by Minnie Swanger. McMURRAY, Robert February 4, Hollidaysburg, Verdict; by Coroner Foust, death was caused from injuries received by explosion of a boiler at Hollidaysburg rolling mill and the jury was unable to determine cause of explosion. McPHERRAN, Porter W. September 13, Verdict; by Coroner McCartney, killed at Tyrone depot, death was caused by being struck by fence in attempting to board a train. MEYER, Arnold July 20, Verdict; by Coroner McCartney, died suddenly at his boarding place on Sixteenth Street, Altoona, death was cause by angina pectoris. NICEWONGER, D. J. June 25, killed on branch road at Stanfield siding, Verdict; death was caused by slipping off the pilot of his engine and being run over by the same engine, Verdict; by Coroner McCartney. PLOWDEN, Female Child February 27, Altoona, Verdict by Coroner Foust, Female child of Daisy Plowden the death was caused by exposure. REESER, Rev. T. F. September 4, Verdict; by Coroner McCartney, drowned at Flowing Spring; death was caused by drowning. SCHELL, George December 21, Verdict; by Coroner McCartney, died on the way to the hospital, death was due to alcoholism and exposure. STEWART, W. B. January 13, Tyrone, Verdict; by Coroner Foust, death by suicide. TREESE, Meryl February 4, Hollidaysburg, Verdict; by Coroner Foust, death was caused from injuries received by explosion of a boiler at Hollidaysburg rolling mill, and the jury was unable to determine cause of explosion. UNKNOWN, Man October 21, Verdict; by Coroner McCartney, found dead on main line near Bennington, death was caused by being struck by engine. WOLF, Samuel August 20, Duncansville, Verdict; by Coroner McCartney, fell on Newry road, death was caused by excessive drinking of whisky.
