Coroner McCartney Was a Busy Man During the Past Twelve Months.
During the year 1898 Coroner McCartney investigated the deaths of eighty-seven persons, as follows:
AINSWORTH, W. A. August 18, Altoona; death caused by peritonitis. ALCORN, William April 5, Altoona; death was caused by being crushed between cars in Altoona yard. ALLEN, William March 14, Altoona; killed by being struck by a train near McGarvey’s. AURANDT, John F. March 12, Tyrone; instantly killed at Tyrone station by falling between the cars while in motion. BARBER, Robert April 27, Altoona; death was caused by a wound from a 38 caliber revolver fired by the hand of Walter Clark, alias Roving Jack, at Tunnel Hill, April 27. Clark fired three times. BARNES, Solomon B. September 16, Altoona; died from injuries received in an accident in a running horse race at the Blair County Fair. BLAMEY, Charles July 15, Altoona; death caused by strangulation, he had gotten his head under a sliding door at the stable of J. Burke, at Sixth Alley and Third Street, which held him fast. BRETT, James August 2, Bennington; death caused by intoxication. BUCHANAN, James W. March 27, Altoona; killed by being run over by engine No. 581 in Altoona yard, at Ninth Avenue and Eighth Street. BUCK, Harry C. October 8, Altoona; death caused by being caught under the shaft of a steam hammer in the upper blacksmith shop of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. BURKET, Jacob August 22, Altoona; death caused by being thrown under the wheels of a freight train while attempting to get off near Cresson, August 22. BUTLER, Andrew April 22, Altoona; death caused by spine disease. CASWELL, Edward August 17, Altoona; death caused by being caught between two Jenny couplers and crushed across the abdomen in the Altoona yard. CHASE, W. S. December 7, Altoona; death caused by stepping in front of a moving train, in Altoona yard, in the darkness. CHISLOCK, Michael June 8, Bennington; killed by a fall of coal at bank of East End Coal Company. CLAPPER, Adolphus February 12, Canoe Creek; found drowned in a stream near Canoe Creek, having evidently driven off a bridge with a buggy, the buggy was over turned upon him. CORBIN, Alta May May 5, Altoona; death result from being burned at J. W. Plummer’s carpenter shop. CORREGAN. Frank January 3, death was caused by an accidental discharge of a gun in the hands of Joseph Fonner at Carlem. CREWAY, John November 26, Franklin Forge; death caused by a stone rolling down from the top of stone quarry and striking him on the head while at work. DAVIS, William June 24, Altoona; death caused by a fall of sand near Duncansville; injured internally. DETWILER, George April 19, Huston Township; death resulted from natural causes. DURHAM, Hugh April 15, Altoona; death caused by internal hemorrhages. EDGAR, Mrs. Minnie February 12, Altoona; death caused by heart failure. ELPERN, Samuel September 26, Altoona; death caused by being run over by wagon No. 1 of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, at the corner of Thirteenth Avenue and Eighteenth Street. FARTOON, Mat May 17, Altoona; death resulted from being injured in a slide at Clover Creek stone quarry. FOGEL, Charles M. August 17, Logan Township; death resulted from natural causes. FRANCE, Barbara September 21, Altoona; death resulted from a dose of carbolic acid, administered by mistake by her mother. GARDELLO, Lorenzo December 13, Altoona; death caused by catarrh of the liver. GAZINK, Paul March 16, Altoona Hospital; death caused by exposure while ill and having no medical attention at Kittanning Point. GERSTWHITE, Peter December 4, Altoona; death caused by old age and heart failure. GETTYS, J. J. March 28, Altoona; death resulted from injuries received on railroad, March 26, at Gallitzin while in charge of his duty. GOBBONEY, Illegitimate child June 25, Altoona; child of Mary Gibboney, death caused by premature birth. GRAJACK, George May 24, Altoona Hospital; death caused by an obstruction of the bowels. HEVERLY, George W. January 7, Tyrone; death was caused by a pistol shot fired by his own hand during temporary insanity. HIPPENSTEEL, William April 21, Altoona; death caused by the crushing of the right leg by a tree falling on it, on April 12; died at the Altoona Hospital, April 21. HOOVER, Philip May 20, Tyrone; death caused by apoplexy. HUNTER, Joseph May 10, Altoona; death resulted from double pneumonia. IMLER, Chambers April 25, Altoona; death resulted from being thrown from a buggy at Eighth Avenue and Twenty-four Street, Altoona, April 23. INFANTS, Two infants October 16, two infants found dead at the entrance to Seventh Street Bridge, Altoona. JOHNSON, Charles M. August 8, Tyrone Township; death caused by spasms. JOHNSTON, William A. January 12, instant death caused by being struck by locomotive of Atlantic Express, one mile west of Tipton. KAMM, Richard March 14, Frankstown; found drowned in the Juniata River. KELLERMAN, Mrs. Levina April 7, of Gaysport; death caused by internal hemorrhages. KEMBERLING, Grant March 23 killed by being struck by a train at McGarvey;s at midnight, March 22. KUSTABORDER, Illegitimate child May 21, child of Ida Kustaborder, of Bellwood, death resulted from unskilled treatment at birth. LACERANTE, Michael February 12, Altoona; died at the Altoona Hospital with acute traumatic meningitis. LUTZ, William February 11, Altoona; death caused by being struck by Johnstown accommodation two miles West of Altoona during a dense fog. MALONE, James May 11, Gaysport; death caused by suicidal drowning in the Juniata River, Hollidaysburg. MANGONE, Pancozia June 24, Altoona; death caused by being struck with engine No. 1,591 at McGarvey’s. McCLAIN, Clarence Lee February 21, Altoona; 6 month old infant, death caused by spasms. McCLELLAND, Frank May 12, Fostoria; death resulted from a knife wound inflicted by a companion, William Hilliard. McFARLAND, Sarah March 5, Altoona; instantly killed near Grazierville, Pa. by being struck by passenger train while gathering coal near the Pennsylvania railroad track. McGARVEY, Tim April 28, struck and killed by engine No. 91, near the Three Culverts, April 27. McMONEGAL, Earl Scott April 15, Altoona; death caused by being crushed between the cars in the Altoona yard, opposite the Logan House, while attempting to board a freight train. McMURRAY, Richard C. November 9, Altoona; death caused by an attempt to step from one car to another and falling between the tracks, his head being cut off by the cars. MILLS, David M. September 23, Roaring Spring; instantly killed by a draft of cars while walking along the railroad near Roaring Spring. MUNICK, Joseph February 21, died at the Altoona Hospital, resulting from a fall from a ledge of rock, alighting on his head at the stone quarry. MYERS, Albert E. January 18, run over by an engine on the Pennsylvania Railroad at Fourth Street, Altoona, January 17, died at Altoona Hospital on January 18. O’DAWD, Christopher April 19, killed by being run over by an engine at Gallitzin tunnel, while asleep along the track. O’HARA, J. W. December 10, Altoona; death caused by being caught in a wreck at Twenty-seventh Street, he was a brakeman; the train broke, and when it came together he was on the platform and was instantly killed. PAUL, David October 26, Altoona; death caused by being struck by passenger train No. 14, on the Pennsylvania Railroad, at Tyrone. REEVES, George A. August 16, Altoona; death caused by apoplexy. RIELY, J. E. March 8, Altoona; death resulted from taking laudanum with suicidal intent. ROBISON, Emment January 9, Altoona; death caused by convulsions. ROMIG, Charles June 18, death resulted from over exertion brought about by alcoholism, died at Altoona Hospital. SCALSO, Jiacento May 4, Altoona; death result from Pneumonia. SHOCK, Alexander November 17, Altoona; death caused by uremia. SHULTZ, Edward March 10, Altoona; he was struck by engine 510 in Altoona yard. While in the discharge of his duty as assistant track foreman, died in the Altoona Hospital. SIMON, John March 2, Altoona; stepped in front of freight train while at work at Kittanning Point, died of the injuries, at Altoona Hospital a few hours afterwards. SIMPSON, Mrs. Jennie October 24, Altoona; death caused by consumption and not having proper care. SPEECE, Thomas G. October 27, Altoona; brakeman on the Pennsylvania Railroad, instantly killed by the breaking of a brake chain while on duty. SYEVENS, John November 22, at Schmucker’s Quarry; death caused by a fall of stone at the quarry. crushing him. TEACOCK, John May 26, Altoona; death resulted from pneumonia. TIGHE, Patrick March 15, Altoona; death resulted from natural causes. UNKNOWN, Child August 20, the child was taken dead from the filtering beds at Canan Station. UNKNOWN, Man April 27, was struck and killed by a train at the three culverts. UNKNOWN, Man August 8, instantly killed at Bellwood while crossing the Pennsylvania railroad by being struck by Atlantic Express. UNKNOWN, Man May 23, Bellwood; was killed by being struck by an engine while attempting to cross the railroad at Bellwood. WARSO, Stephen January 8, death resulted from being run over by a train of cars near Cresson on January 7, died at the Altoona hospital on January 8, at 5 p. m. WERTZ, Albert September 22, a 21 month old child, smothered while asleep at his home, one mile below Altoona. WERTZ, W. H. May 15, Altoona; death was caused by being struck by a stone thrown from a blast in the Logan Township stone quarry. WILSON, William May 20, Altoona; death resulted from his coming in contact with a live guy wire of the Electric Light company. WINDSOR, John May 24, Altoona; killed by being struck with a engine at the Three Culverts. WOLF. Barbara October 1, Altoona; death caused by heart trouble. YEAGER, Benjamin March 3, Altoona; died from injuries received while blowing up stone with dynamite near Hutchison’s, two miles below Altoona.
