Altoona Mirror Tuesday, January 1, 1901
During the year 1900 Coroner McCartney held inquisitions upon the bodies of the following persons, whose deaths insulted from violence and other causes.
BAUM, Herman September 8, Altoona; death was caused by strangulation by being accidentally caught by the steel wire, table and drum in the freight elevator shaft of the Altoona Silk Mill. BROWN, Daniel June 12, Altoona; death was caused by complication of diseases, super induced by Alcoholism and exposure. FRANK, Lawrence December 13, Altoona; death was caused by natural causes, there being no evidence of violence. HAMOR, George B. January 28, Tyrone; death was caused by drowning by being accidentally [with his horse and buggy ] thrown down an embankment into the Juniata river at Nealmont sometime during Saturday night while on his way home. KAUFFMAN, Adam April 3, Altoona; January 27, death was caused by the wrecking of Western Express, which he was engineer, in Altoona Yard, near G. D. office on the morning of March 21, 1900. KELLY, Fred June 20, Altoona; death was caused by cerebrospinal meningitis, super induced probably by violence. MILLER, James October 12, Bellwood; death was caused by being struck by an engine or train on the Pennsylvania Railroad at or near the passenger station at Bellwood. MYERS, Frank June 4, Altoona; death was caused from the effect of a 38 caliber bullet fired from a revolver in the hands of some person unknown to the jury on the night of May 27. The shot from evidence adjudged, appears to have been accidental and due probably to recklessness. PRICHARD, William December 23, Gallitzin; at Altoona, the jury had that William Prichard came to his death, Saturday night, December 15, while employed by the Gallitzin work train, through the wreck caused at Kittanning Point, on the Pennsylvania Railroad. TAYLOR, Charles December 27, Bellwood; death was caused by drowning by falling into the Juniata River, at Glasgow’s Dam, one mile north of Bellwood, Pa. YON, Samuel November 10, Altoona; death was caused by a draft of four cars for the shops running through the Altoona yards on November 16, without brakes, underneath which Mr. Yon was at work, rolling and crushing him.
In addition to the above cases, Coroner McMartney was called to investigate causes leading in the death of seventy-four other persons, at the conclusion of his investigation he decided were unnecessary.
